Birdoswald Roman Fort

Birdoswald is a Roman Fort, part of Hadrian's Wall, and a great family day out, or even a place to catch your breath and relax when walking or cycling the length of the famous Roman Wall. The visitor centre displays some interesting, historic artefacts and a model of Hadrian's Wall at its full height. The tea room boasts scrumptious, locally made cakes, hot soups and sandwiches with hot beverages and a cosy environment in which to enjoy them. If you have brought your own refreshments, picnic areas are available in the main courtyard, the orchard and at the south end of the fort, with spectacular views over the River Irthing. Farmhouse-style accommodation is available for the weary traveller who needs to rest up before another day of adventuring. Like many attractions in Cumbria, there is an abundance of local wildlife to be seen in the area.
